Experience—not genetics, or business schools, or training programs—is the primary source of learning how to lead. Yet, very few companies put experience at the heart of their leadership development systems. Why? Because it’s surprisingly difficult. Professor McCall, a preeminent expert on leadership development, has spent his career studying the “why” and “how” of putting experience at the heart of development. |

In this Catalyst Initiative, Professor McCall will explain which experiences matter, what they teach, and how companies can increase the odds of their people learning important lessons. While there is no magic formula, this Catalyst Initiative will show what a leadership development system based on experience might look like, and provide a framework for using experience more systematically. It will address key strategic issues like connecting experience-based development to the business strategy, building it into succession planning, and providing crucial interventions to support learning. |
